# Getting started

Five steps from inviting the bot to the first chat message between Minecraft and Discord.

Status, player count and displays work through your Minecraft server's address and don't need a plugin. For chat, console and whitelist you install the MC-Sync plugin or mod and connect the server to a Discord channel. This page walks you through both.

## Steps

1. **Invite the bot.** Open [invite.mc-sync.eu](https://invite.mc-sync.eu), pick your Discord server and confirm.

    You should now see the bot in your Discord server's member list.

2. **Install the plugin or mod.** Get the file for your server from the [download page](https://mc-sync.eu/en/download/), put it into the `plugins` folder (Spigot, Paper, Folia) or the `mods` folder (Fabric, Quilt, Forge, NeoForge) and start the Minecraft server.

    You should now see the file `plugins/mc-sync/config.yml` or `config/mc-sync.properties`.

3. **Add the server and connect it to a channel.**

1. Open the [dashboard](https://mc-sync.eu/dashboard), click "Sign in with Discord" and then "Manage" next to your Discord server.
2. Open "Servers" and click "+ Add server".
3. Enter a name and an address, for example `Survival` and `play.example.eu`, and click "Next".
4. Pick the chat channel, accept the terms and click "Connect and create token".

1. Run `/server add name: Survival address: play.example.eu channel: #minecraft`.
2.  Click "Accept and connect".

You should now see a command with a code. It's valid for 15 minutes.

4. **Run the command in the Minecraft server's console.**

```
/mcsync connect K7M2QX4P
```

The plugin writes the token into its config itself and connects. Forge before Minecraft 1.19 has no `/mcsync`, so there you put the token in by hand. The same goes if you'd rather do that anyway, see [Chat sync](https://mc-sync.eu/en/guides/chat-sync/#with-a-token-instead-of-a-code).

You should now see "Connected" next to your server under "Servers" in the dashboard. In the game, `/mcsync status` shows the same.

5. **Write a chat message in the game.**

    You should see it in the Discord channel after a few seconds. A reply in the channel shows up in the game.

If a step doesn't work, see [Chat sync](https://mc-sync.eu/en/guides/chat-sync/#problems) and [Troubleshooting](https://mc-sync.eu/en/guides/troubleshooting/). Everything else the chat can do is on [Chat sync](https://mc-sync.eu/en/guides/chat-sync/) too.

`/server` is missing in Discord

Discord only shows `/server` to members with the "Manage Server" permission. You can allow other roles in your Discord server settings under "Integrations".
